Using MIDI Program Change messages to change Programs on an SPX990

Last Update: 02/05/2004

Programs can be changed on the SPX990 in Real Time by having MIDI Program Change messages sent from any MIDI device that will transmit program change messages.
  1. Connect the 'MIDI Out' of the device that will be transmitting the MIDI messages to the MIDI IN of the SPX990.
  2. Press the [EDIT] button on the SPX990.
  3. Press the Up Button 'Page Select' button on the SPX990 until the display shows 'Page 3 MIDI Function'.
NOTE: Steps 4-9 are not necessary to Receive Program Change messages. Configuring the Program Change table is an option that allows for custom mapping of Program Change numbers to Program Effect numbers.
  4. Press either the Up Button or Down Button button underneath 'PGMtbl' on the display.
  5. Press the Up Button 'Page Select' button. The display will show 'Channel MIDI-PGM SPX-MEM'.
  6. Press the Up Button and Down Button buttons underneath 'Channel' on the display to select the MIDI Channel on which the Program Change messages will be received.
  7. Press the Up Button and Down Button buttons underneath 'MIDI-PGM' on the display to select the desired Program Change number.
  8. Press the Up Button and Down Button buttons underneath 'SPX-MEM' on the display to select the desired program that is to be recalled by the Program Change message set in step 7.
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until configuration of the Program Change Table is complete.
  10. Press the [MEMORY] button to exit the 'Edit' mode.
  11. Send a test MIDI Program Change message from the device connected to the MIDI IN of the SPX990.
