When / How Often To Get New Drum Heads

This is a great question, and it varies based on things like playing style and tuning range/habits. Here are some ways to determine if you should change your heads for new ones:

  • The head is damaged / dented.
  • The head sounds dead, regardless of tension.
  • The head is not holding pitch as well is it did when new.

Although bottom heads are not played on directly, they should also be changed as if they exhibit any of the above issues.
