What's the Gentleman system?

Last Update: 09/03/2010

The Gentleman system is a design where the point at which the bell joint and bass joint (also known as the long joint) connect is in a different place than standard bassoons. With the Gentleman system, the bell joint is cut longer than normal and the bass joint is cut shorter than normal, which makes those joints more similar in length and more compact. Because of this, the bassoon can also fit in a smaller case. The "Gentleman" system name comes from the image of a gentleman's briefcase.
