How are trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns different? Similar?

Last Update: 06/26/2013

All of these instruments are similar and play in the same register. The trumpet is long and slender in appearance and is the most common instrument of the group. The trumpet is known for it's volume and register capabilities and a bright tone. The cornet has a great introductory instrument for beginning trumpet players. The cornet is popular amongst military and brass bands. The flugelhorn is the relative of the trumpet that has a "sweeter" tone and sound, and is commonly used in a jazz setting.
